Maria Nevils outside a town council meeting in Fairview, Texas, Tuesday, August 6, 2024 in opposition to a request for a special use permit by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to build its proposed McKinney Texas Temple. Is an ugly dispute over a proposed massive Mormon temple in Fairview finally headed toward resolution?
We hope so. Henry Lessner, mayor of this Collin County town of 11,000, issued a statement this week announcing that town officials have agreed “in a good faith effort to resolve this issue without litigation” by participating in a nonbinding mediation with leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.Lessner told us that the mediation is set for Nov. 18, and will be guided by former U.S. Magistrate Jeff Kaplan, a longtime respected jurist well known in Dallas legal circles.
Immediately after the vote, Lessner said he received notice of a potential lawsuit by church members, and last month the town voted to create a legal defense fund. Lessner told us that was partly in response to calls and letters he’s received from across the world from people offering to help the town.Lessner made a good point when he noted that there are examples of the church agreeing to modify its building designs in other cities after facing similar community outcry.
