Donald Trump Will Give Benjamin Netanyahu a “Blank Check” for Military Action – Panetta Warns
Former CIA Director and U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has raised concerns about possible foreign policy shifts that could emerge under Donald Trump’s presidency, specifically in relation to Israeli military actions. According to the DAILY POST, Panetta expressed worries that Trump, once in office in January, might offer unconditional support to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, effectively granting him a “blank check” to pursue military objectives, especially those targeting Iran.
In an interview with The Guardian, Panetta remarked that regarding Middle East policy, he believes Trump intends to give Netanyahu carte blanche. Panetta further explained that Trump’s stance could be interpreted as essentially saying, “Whatever actions you choose to take or whomever you decide to target, you have my endorsement.” Panetta suggested that Trump had already hinted at this approach prior to the election.
Panetta’s statements come amid heightened regional tensions after the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel, which has led Netanyahu to intensify military actions, particularly against Iranian-linked entities. Panetta’s warning implies that a Trump administration might adopt a more assertive foreign policy, with an enhanced focus on supporting Israel’s security interests. This stance, he indicates, could contribute to escalating regional confrontations.
Reports indicate that Trump and Netanyahu have kept in close contact throughout Trump’s campaign, underlining a relationship that could strengthen further after Trump’s recent victory over Democratic nominee Kamala Harris. Following the election, Netanyahu offered his congratulations to Trump, which many view as a signal of a potentially fortified U.S.-Israel alliance in the coming years.
