Kenya To Have 52 Counties As These 5 More Counties Could Be Created Following A Proposal By UDA MP
MP affiliated with President Ruto’s UDA is now seeking to have the number of counties increased from the current 47 to 52. Kuria East Member of Parliament Marwa Kitayama is seeking to table a Bill at the National Assembly to amend the 2010 Constitution and have number of counties increased.
The move by the MP who is now serving his second term has reportedly attracted the support of a section of lawmakers who feel that their regions are not well represented.
Among the lawmakers supporting Kitayama’s proposal include Endebess MP Robert Pukose, Mt Elgon MP Fred Kapondi and Tiaty MP William Kamket among others. Nyatika MP Tom Odege has also named other counties like Marsabit and Homabay which he says should also be divided.
Marwa Kitayama has already written to Speaker Moses Wetang’ula seeking to table the Bill which, if passed, will see the number of devolved units increased.
The Bill seeks to create the following five new counties:
1. Kuria county – carved from Migori County.
2. Teso County – hived off from Busia County.
3. East Pokot County – from both Baringo County and West Pokot County.
4. Mount Elgon County – carved from Bungoma County and Trans Nzoia County.
5. Mwingi County – hived off from Kitui County
