2025 Volvo EX40 price and specs: Electric XC40 gets a new name

The Volvo XC40 Recharge has been renamed to EX40 for 2025 and beyond, with the updated electric SUV now arriving in Australia with greater driving range and a wider lineup.

By being sold as the EX40, the SUV is aligned with Volvo’s naming structure for its electric vehicles (EVs) – which includes the EX30 and upcoming EX90 and ES90, as well as the Chinese-market EM90 people mover.

Volvo will also rename the former XC40 Recharge’s coupe-esque twin, the C40 Recharge, to the EC40, which a spokesperson for the brand in Australia told CarExpert is due in the first half of 2025.

For the ‘new’ EX40, the EV’s lineup has been expanded to three variants in Australia, with a new flagship Black Edition joining the existing single-motor, rear-wheel drive (RWD) and dual-motor, all-wheel drive (AWD) grades.

The base Volvo EX40 starts from $76,990 before on-road costs, representing no price change compared to the XC40 Recharge, despite now being fitted with a battery which is almost 20 per cent larger (89kWh vs 69kWh).

It’s also exclusively sold in flagship Ultra guise, rather than the Plus variant which was previously the only grade sold in Australia.

This means 20-inch alloy wheels (up from 19 inches), Microtech upholstery, a unique interior, LED headlights with an active cornering function, a 14-speaker Harman Kardon sound system and a surround-view camera.

Volvo has also swapped the name of the step-up XC40 Recharge Ultimate Twin Motor AWD to the EX40 Ultra Twin Motor Performance AWD, while also giving the more powerful electric SUV a $4000 price cut.

It’s now priced from $81,990 before on-road costs.

As the AWD variant already offered the highest level of equipment available, it has no extra features for 2025.

There is however a new flagship, with the dual-motor AWD-based EX40 Black Edition joining the lineup, adding Onyx Black paintwork, 20-inch black alloy wheels, and black suede/Microtech upholstery for an extra $1000.

The first examples of the Volvo EX40 are arriving in Australia now.
