Q: What is eczema, and how can I manage it?

A: Eczema is an umbrella term used to refer to several conditions resulting in dry, itchy, irritated, inflamed skin.

Atopic dermatitis is one of the most well-known variants, and the most common inflammatory skin disease worldwide. It commonly begins in childhood, but may appear at any age. It can occur anywhere on the body, but has a predilection for the bends of the elbows and knees. In infants, it is commonly on the cheeks. It tends to flare up due to triggers like cold or hot weather, stress or certain allergens.

To manage eczema, it’s essential to keep your skin moisturized. Use a thick, fragrance-free cream or ointment after bathing. Vaseline and Aquaphor are some of the best options. We recommend taking a short, daily bath with lukewarm water. Avoid harsh soaps, instead opting for a sensitive skin soap, such as Dove Sensitive Skin bar soap. Try to avoid irritants, such as added fragrances, as much as possible.

If not controlled with the above measures, your eczema might require prescription treatments like corticosteroids or even immune-modulating drugs. If you’re struggling with severe eczema or frequent flare-ups, consulting a dermatologist can help you explore personalized treatment options.

Managing eczema is about consistency and knowing what works best for your skin. With the right approach, you can keep flare-ups in check and maintain healthy, comfortable skin.
