Benue State University Introduces New Faculty of Agriculture to Strengthen Food Technology Programs

Benue State University (BSU) is set to launch a new Faculty of Agriculture, further boosting the university’s impact in the field of food technology. This announcement was made by BSU’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Joe Iorapuu, on Friday during the 10th anniversary celebration of the university’s Centre for Food Technology and Research (BSU-CEFTER). The initiative, approved by Governor Hyacinth Alia, aims to complement the ongoing work of BSU-CEFTER, which has been a hub for addressing food security and agricultural challenges in Nigeria for the past decade.

BSU-CEFTER, a project funded by the World Bank, was originally established to focus on post-harvest issues and provide advanced education in food technology. The new Faculty of Agriculture will significantly expand these efforts, supporting both undergraduate and postgraduate students with practical knowledge in agricultural production, crop management, and food processing. Prof. Iorapuu emphasized that the faculty would help advance BSU’s role in fostering entrepreneurship, innovation, and skill development, particularly in the area of food technology.

The university’s current food technology research includes six mini-factories that produce cassava flour, tomato paste, and other food products. With the creation of the Faculty of Agriculture, these facilities will be integrated into a broader educational framework that enhances students’ understanding of the agricultural value chain, from production through to logistics and transportation.

Prof. Iorapuu highlighted that the Faculty of Agriculture would also address the critical role of agriculture in rural development, food security, and poverty alleviation. This move is expected to open up new opportunities for local and international students, while also creating pathways for industry collaborations and job creation. The university plans to build on the success of BSU-CEFTER, which has enrolled over 30 international students and helped generate over $1 million in revenue through its subsidiary, CEFTER Foods Nigeria Ltd.
