Social media influencer and blogger Scophine Aoko Otieno, widely known as Maverick Aoko, has publicly addressed her sudden disappearance for the first time since she was found at the Kenya-Tanzania border after going missing for nearly ten days.
Aoko’s disappearance, which had sparked widespread concern, was confirmed on Friday, November 1, when her aide revealed that she had been located at the border. Her last tweet, posted on October 22, marked the last known activity on her social media accounts before she vanished.
The aide shared the news of Aoko’s discovery, stating that the family had been contacted by a hospital where Aoko had been taken by an unidentified person. According to the statement, the person claimed to have found Aoko outside their gate and brought her to the hospital for care.
“She’s been found at the Kenya-Tanzania border. Her family was called by a hospital. She was brought there by someone who found her outside their gate,” the aide shared on Aoko’s X account. “We don’t know much yet, but her father is on the way. We’ll keep you updated. Thank you for your support.”
Despite the announcement, no photos or videos of Aoko were released at that time, and she remained silent for nearly a week.
On November 8, Aoko finally spoke out via her X account, reassuring her followers that she is well and expressing gratitude for the support she received. She confirmed that her aide had full permission from both her and her family to manage her social media during her absence.
Aoko acknowledged the skepticism surrounding her disappearance, explaining that the mistrust from Kenyans was understandable given the situation. She also clarified that her account had not been compromised and that passwords are regularly updated for security.
“Your clamor, fervor, noise, agitation, and prayers kept air in my lungs and blood in my heart. Asante for every tweet, retweet, call, concern, message, and voice that spoke out for me. I am grateful for the care I am receiving. The spirit remains strong, and my resolve is unbroken. No amount of spittle can quench a furnace,” she wrote.
Regarding the events surrounding her disappearance, Aoko hinted at revealing the full details once she is well enough. “What happened? I will tell you, oh I will expose every minute detail, every crumb. But we will talk more when I am better,” she added.
Aoko’s sudden reappearance follows a wave of concern from the public and public figures alike, including Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, who on October 30, voiced his alarm over her unexplained absence and called for action to be taken.
