BookMyShow files FIR against ticket scalping for high-demand events

BookMyShow, the online ticketing platform, said that it has filed a First Information Report (FIR) to address the recent illegal ticket sales practices linked to high-demand live entertainment events. The move comes amid rising concerns over event ticket availability.

In a statement, a BookMyShow spokesperson said, “In addition to the FIR (First Information Report) filed by BookMyShow on the black marketing and scalping of tickets for recent high-demand live entertainment experiences, we have also provided all requisite information and details to law enforcement agencies in their investigations and will continue to proactively fight against scalping and black marketing of tickets – practices that are condemned and punishable by law in India.”

With events like Maroon 5’s upcoming performance and Lollapalooza India approaching, the company aims to collaborate with government agencies to reduce ticket demand exploitation.

Ticket scalping has become a major issue in India, especially for major entertainment events, where resellers inflate prices to profit from high demand. This practice undermines fans’ access to legitimate, affordable tickets and violates India’s legal guidelines on ticket sales.

The scalping situation became apparent during the recent ticket sale for Coldplay’s concerts, scheduled for January 18, 19, and 21, 2025. Tickets were made available on BookMyShow on September 22, 2024, at noon but sold out in merely 30 minutes. Numerous users reported being logged out of the platform before the sale commenced, while tickets rapidly surfaced on Viagogo at prices soaring 30-40 times their original value.
