Cody Gakpo explains how Slot has them flying and not floating – No room to get too big for their boots

Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo has admitted Arne Slot is stopping them from getting carried away this season, by essentially ignoring the previous game.

Soccer News cover comments from the Dutchman today made to Viaplay, in which he admits Slot is proving to be a tricky customer to please.

Liverpool have enjoyed a flying start to the season so far, sitting top of the Premier League and the Champions League tables at this moment in time.

Gakpo has been in particularly fine form, with six goals and two assists in 16 games in all competitions to his name so far.

The latest of his goals came this week as he added to his tally with a strike in the 4-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen at Anfield.

It continued a good week for him after he bagged his first league goal of the season in the 2-1 win over Brighton last weekend.

Given Liverpool’s start to the season and the fact that things seem to be going so well under their manager it would be very easy to get carried away by the prospect of what could be on the cards this season.

Gakpo, though, insists nobody is getting above themselves or floating at this moment in time and Slot is a key reason why.

“Myself, for sure, because of the person I am,” he said when asked who is ensuring Liverpool fly and not float.

“Then there’s my dad, my family, my girlfriend. And the people here at the club, because you have guys who have been doing this for years, so to speak. You talk to them, they help you.”

“And the coach. How he approaches every match… It’s like you haven’t played the previous match. We have to show ourselves again every match, which eliminates any floating.

“Mo (Salah) has been playing for Liverpool for eight years and scores almost every game! Then there is very little room to get too big for your boots. It’s also something I wouldn’t want.”
