The 45th US President is vying for a return to the White House
US presidential candidate Donald Trump recently opened up about his love for golf, his recent club championship win, and a special trophy presentation from golf legend Jack Nicklaus during a podcast appearance with NFL coach Bill Belichick and sportscaster Jim Gray.
Speaking on the “Let’s Go” podcast, Trump talked not only about his passion for golf but also how the club championship represents a “major” for amateurs like him.
Back in March, the former president celebrated victories at both the Club Championship and Senior Club Championship at Trump International Golf Club.
According to Trump, his accomplishment impressed Nicklaus, who offered to present the trophy himself.
Trump’s appearance on the podcast gave listeners a rare glimpse into how competitive he remains on the course – and why he feels these tournaments carry so much weight.
Discussing the intensity of club championships, Trump likened them to the professional majors, saying, “Club championships, for us, [are] like a major, you know… A lot of really good players. You have to be able to handle pressure.”
He went on to explain the importance of remaining calm and collected, describing the experience as “high-pressure” for amateurs.
He also shared a story about a scratch golfer who, despite his skill, admitted he gets so anxious over three-foot putts in club championships that his vision goes blurry.
Earlier in August, Trump shared similar insights, saying, “A lot of people can’t play in club championships.
The club championship is our major, and they can’t handle the pressure.” Trump also highlighted that his victory came against high-handicap players – some as much as 45 years younger.
Although the former president is known for his love of golf, he’s faced his fair share of skepticism regarding his prowess on the course.
Sportswriter Rick Reilly has previously questioned Trump’s methods, accusing him of rule-bending, while fans have often commented on his swing.
Trump’s latest collaboration with US Open champion Bryson DeChambeau, however, garnered over 12 million views on YouTube, a rare feat for golf content and one that has swayed some of his critics.
Why Jack Nicklaus decided to present the trophy
Trump spoke warmly of Nicklaus, a long-time friend and supporter, recalling how the 18-time major winner was so impressed by his achievement that he felt compelled to present the trophy.
“When Jack heard I won the club championship, he asked, ‘How old are you?'” Trump explained. “I refused to say over the phone. But you know… [I said] 78; 45 years age difference… When Jack heard, he said, ‘Gee, I’d love to come over and hand you the trophy.'”
Nicklaus, famously known as the “Golden Bear,” endorsed Trump in the last election. Although Nicklaus has not publicly commented on the matter, his visit added to the former president’s narrative of overcoming odds.
The meeting between Nicklaus and Trump on the golf course, however, was a strong nod to the mutual admiration between the two sports enthusiasts.
The significance of the trophy presentation extends beyond the win itself for Trump.
For him, the event symbolized perseverance and sportsmanship, underscoring his view that age is irrelevant on the fairways.
