Honourable Martins Amaewhule, Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, has publicly criticized Governor Siminalayi Fubara for allegedly undermining the rule of law in the state. Amaewhule, a key figure among lawmakers allied with former governor Nyesom Wike, stated that Fubara’s actions, which appear to disregard the legal framework governing the state, are a direct threat to the integrity of governance in Rivers State. He emphasized that any leader who flouts the law compromises the foundational principles that the state’s governance should be based on.

In a video posted by Symfoni on YouTube, Amaewhule pointed out the hypocrisy in Fubara’s behavior, as the governor expects others to follow legal standards while seemingly exempting himself from the same rules. He argued that such conduct is not only unacceptable but dangerous, as it could set a harmful precedent for future leadership in the state. According to Amaewhule, allowing this kind of disregard for the law would weaken the very fabric of governance in Rivers State.

The Speaker stressed the importance of the rule of law in maintaining a functional democracy, warning that any deviation from this principle could erode the public’s trust in their leaders and institutions. He expressed deep concern that Fubara’s actions reflect a broader disregard for the legal obligations that accompany public office. Amaewhule made it clear that this type of leadership is not suitable for Rivers State and should be condemned by all, especially those entrusted with upholding the law.

Amaewhule called on his fellow lawmakers to unite in opposing what he described as a growing threat to the rule of law. He reminded them of their constitutional duty to safeguard the laws of Nigeria and protect the public’s interests, stressing that their oath to the Constitution should remain inviolable. The Speaker emphasized that standing up for the law, even in the face of pressure or threats from the executive, is a fundamental part of their roles as representatives.

He also urged his colleagues to act courageously and without fear, ensuring that the Constitution is upheld regardless of any intimidation from the governor or other political figures. Amaewhule reaffirmed that their duty is to the people of Rivers State, and any action that threatens the Constitution undermines their mandate. He made it clear that no pressure or threats would deter them from their commitment to safeguarding the rule of law.

Amaewhule reiterated that Governor Fubara’s refusal to comply with the law is an issue that cannot be allowed to continue. He stated that the governor’s actions must be addressed, as failing to do so would be an injustice to the people of Rivers State and the nation at large.

He said, “We have a duty to protect the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and we won’t go back on our oath of office, no matter the threats from anybody.”
