Lantern and light walks have become a great winter outing, but not all are created equally
I have been on a lot of winter light and lantern walks over the last five years, so when I say this one is worth it, I mean it. Gulliver’s World’s Land of Lights is a beautiful trail through the theme park in the cool autumn and winter evenings.
This year’s theme is ‘WonderWild’ and has everything from five-foot cupcakes and chocolate bars to a menagerie of animals and flowers as tall as trees, this stunning light walk in Warrington will delight children of all ages. This is the second year the theme park has chosen to use the colder months as a backdrop for a magical display of lanterns across one mile of the grounds.
With other light walks I have been on, the displays have been a little bare or far apart, but at Land of Lights there are hundreds of beautifully crafted lanterns and with music echoing out from behind trees, it is like stepping into a wonderland. I took two four-year-olds and they loved spotting all the lanterns and colours, prompting wonderful conversations about animals and doughnuts.
My son could be found dancing under the glittering lights along the trail and stopping in awe at each new section. The walk is accessible and suitable for prams, though I would advise sensible shoes as the ground can be a little uneven at times.
The small play areas are open allowing the kids to intersperse their emersion into this fantastical light display with climbing and slides – a great way to let them run off excess energy. Gulliver’s World has also set up a number of hot drink stands, food stalls and marshmallow toasting fires to add to the autumnal/wintery atmosphere.
So you can have a pit stop with a hot chocolate while your little ones embrace the novelty of a playground in the dark (it is well-lit). I will advise, Land of Lights is selling light-up wands for £8 each or two for £15 – I know this is always an argument with my son, so I am warning you in case this is not something you want to spend money on and there is no reason you can bring your own from home.
Overall, this is a wonderful wintery walk that, dare I say it in early November, got me in a very Christmassy mood. And I think the ticket prices are reasonable compared to others and given how jam-packed with lanterns it is.
Tickets are priced at £15 each for everyone over three, under threes go free and people with Blue Light cards, NHS IDs, MoD cards or MAX cards get a £2 discount. Blue Badge holders, people on DLA or PIP, people with Access cards or carers also have discounted tickets of £7.50 – but please check your eligibility via the website.
Speaking ahead of my visit to the Land of Lights, Ross Partridge, festival manager, said: “We have been so pleased by the reaction to our second Land of Lights festival by the people of Warrington and those from even further afield. WonderWild is our most ambitious Land of Lights festival yet and we can’t wait for everyone to experience it.
“The festival is a welcome boost to the local economy over the winter season and provides an affordable and family-friendly activity for all to enjoy.”
Land of Lights runs at Gulliver’s World in Warrington and Milton Keynes from Saturday, November 9 till January 4, 2025. For more information and tickets visit their website here.
