Kabuye Alleges What Happened in 2021 That Led to Party Members Losing Seats and NRM Losing Influence
Damian Kabuye, the Chairman of the ‘NRM Foot Soldiers Greater Masaka’, has opened up about the political challenges that led to NRM members losing their seats and the party’s influence declining in the region during the 2021 elections.
In a recent meeting with Godfrey Kiwanda Ssubi, the NRM Vice President for Buganda Region, Kabuye explained that the impact of the 2021 election results left the Greater Masaka region politically altered. He stated, “Honestly, 2021 left our region politically altered. Many of our members lost their seats, and the party lost its influence. We decided to begin mobilising well ahead of time.”
Kabuye noted that the group’s formation came in response to the National Unity Platform (NUP) securing the majority of seats in the region during the elections. The group is now actively working on strategies to mobilise support for the 2026 general elections.
The meeting, held at the NRM Secretariat in Kampala, also included a discussion about the need for greater youth involvement in the party’s structures. Kiwanda emphasised that youth leadership should be prioritised, suggesting, “Sometimes, youth seats on councils are occupied by older individuals who hold on to the position well beyond the age of 35. That needs to be changed.”
Kabuye and other members of the group, representing districts from Masaka, Kyotera, Kalungu, Rakai, Bukomansimbi, Sembabule, and Kalangala, requested that Kiwanda serve as their patron. He agreed and pledged to help raise funds for the group’s activities, including securing a vehicle for their operations. Kiwanda also reflected on the challenges of divided loyalties in the 2021 elections, which resulted in the NRM losing 22 seats in Buganda. He urged unity within the party to prevent similar issues in the future.
