The government has revealed that it is working to provide more opportunities for its citizens, including students, to go abroad for work and study. This comes as the government continues its efforts to support Kenyans living in Lebanon, where many migrant workers and students are currently facing challenges due to the ongoing conflict.

On Thursday, November 7, during a meeting with the Committee on Diaspora Affairs, officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs acknowledged that data on Kenyans abroad remains unclear. Principal Secretary for Diaspora Affairs, Roseline Njogu, shared that 26,599 Kenyans are living and working in Lebanon, although only 7,119 are officially registered. These registered individuals have their locations and details documented, making it easier for the government to track them.

Njogu also confirmed that 167 Kenyans have been repatriated so far, with another 257 expected to return in the coming days. “An evacuation team, led by the State Department for Diaspora and Foreign Affairs, is on the ground conducting verifications and clearances. So far, 167 Kenyans have been repatriated, with another 257 expected this week,” she said.

As part of the ongoing efforts to facilitate more opportunities for Kenyans abroad, the government is also focusing on ensuring safe migration for workers and students. Hundreds of Kenyans have moved to Lebanon seeking employment in sectors such as hospitality, under agreements with the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

The government’s initiatives aim to provide more avenues for Kenyans to seek opportunities abroad, while also ensuring their safety and well-being.
