Mityana Municipality MP Francis Zaake has revealed on how events unfolded leading to his assault by Kilak North MP Anthony Akol in Uganda’s Parliament.
Zaake recounted that he had gone to raise concerns in the chambers over a potential security issue after he suspected someone could be carrying a firearm during the debate of the controversial coffee bill.
He voiced the worries to Speaker Anita Among and requested her to check one of her bodyguards as he feared safety could be compromised.
After the Speaker responded to his request and confirmed there was no firearm, Zaake attempted to return to his seat to continue participating in the session.
However, upon arriving back at his place, he found that his seat had already been occupied by MP Akol.
Zaake claims that this led to an exchange with MP Akol and he ended up being assaulted.
MP Zaake being rushed to hospital
The confrontation took place shortly before the controversial debate on the National Coffee (Amendment) Bill 2024 on Wednesday.
Zaake was rushed to St. Francis Hospital Nsambya, where he is receiving medical care following the incident.
Zaake has announced plans to take legal action against Akol. He has stated that the assault was unprovoked and insisted on justice.
