The outage, which occurred at 11:29 a.m., was confirmed by several electricity distribution companies, including Ikeja Electric and Eko DisCo. In separate customer notices, both companies acknowledged the grid failure, noting efforts underway to restore power. Ikeja Electric issued a message to its customers, stating, “Please be informed that we experienced a system outage today, 07 November 2024, at 11:29 Hrs affecting supply within our network. Restoration of supply is ongoing in collaboration with our critical stakeholders.”
Eko DisCo also informed its customers, stating, “Kindly be informed that at precisely 11:29 hours of today, 7th November 2024, we experienced the simultaneous loss of supply across our network. A potential system failure or collapse is suspected. We are currently working with our partners as we hope for speedy restoration of the grid.”
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), which oversees the national grid, has not yet released a formal statement regarding the latest collapse. The company’s previous update, following another recent failure, mentioned ongoing efforts to stabilize the grid, though the system has continued to falter.
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) recently announced plans to hold a public hearing to investigate the frequent collapses. Meanwhile, the minister of power has commented on the situation, attributing grid collapses to complex factors that sometimes result in transmission line failures. He added that the government is working to mitigate the frequency of such incidents.
The latest collapse highlights ongoing issues in Nigeria’s power sector, which has struggled with multiple grid failures each month in recent years. Many businesses have been forced to rely on self-powered generators to maintain operations due to the unreliability of the national grid.
With this incident, the grid has now collapsed ten times in 2024, underscoring the critical need for reforms to stabilize the country’s power supply and reduce the impact of outages on Nigeria’s economy and daily life.
