Our Editors Swear By This Hair Styling Product

TRES hero

When it comes to styling your hair, choosing the right products is half the battle. Think about it: You pick cleansers and serums and moisturizers based on your skin goals, so why wouldn’t you do the same when it comes to your hair?

While mousse is the foundation of every hairstyle, different looks call for different formulas. Hydration and definition should be top of mind when rocking natural curls, but volume is typically a higher priority for bouncy blowouts. That’s why TRESemmé has multiple options to choose from.

Read on to learn how our editors use mousse to bring three different hairstyles to life, plus the multitasking TRESemmé product you’ll need to recreate each one.

Bouncy Natural Curls

Beauty Director Lauren Valenti uses mousse to embrace and define her natural curl pattern. “I love mousse’s airy texture, which makes it easy to distribute throughout my curls,” she says. “It adds body, volume, and definition with just the right amount of hold. It’s durable yet flexible with a touchable finish.”

Because curly hair tends to be drier than other hair types, hydration should be a priority when choosing any product—including mousse. TRESemmé Flawless Curls Mousse is a smart choice because it’s infused with nourishing coconut and avocado oil for hydrated, bouncy curls that maintain their shape for up to 24 hours.

To achieve Valenti’s signature look, spread a generous dollop of the fluffy formula all over the palm of your hand, then scrunch your damp hair from the ends up toward the roots. “I like to apply mousse in sections, starting at the ends and working up to the roots for that lifted volume,” Valenti says.

If you want extra lift, grab more mousse and scrunch a second time around the root area. You can air dry your hair or speed up the process with a diffuser. Afterwards, Valenti suggests flipping your head over and shaking out your curls for extra body and bounce.

Voluminous Blowouts

There’s just something about a smooth and bouncy ‘90s-esque blowout that makes you feel unstoppable. The next time you do one at home, Social Media Director Taylor Ford suggests reaching for mousse first.

“I have naturally wavy hair, and adding mousse has made my waves way more manageable, and blowouts at home feel salon-quality with ease,” she says. “It’s a lightweight, one-step addition to my routine that makes all the difference.”

TRESemmé Total Volume Plumping Mousse is especially ideal for blowouts because the volumizing formula delivers touchably soft, fuller-looking hair that can hold styles all day long.

Dispense the lush product onto a wide-tooth comb before combing from the roots toward the ends of your damp hair. Use your hands to rough dry your hair up and away from your scalp with a blow dryer (Ford likes to do this with her head flipped over for extra lift). Reach for a round brush when it’s about 80 percent dry, then keep drying while brushing your hair in an upwards motion.

For supermodel-level volume, set your hair with velcro rollers until it’s cooled completely. Finish off the energized look with a spritz of TRESemmé Extra Hold Hairspray.

Undone Waves

Few hairstyles are as versatile as soft, effortless waves. They work everywhere, from the beach to the red carpet, but it can take some finessing—and the right product—to get them just right.

“Waves are tricky because you want them to look undone and loose but also don’t want them to immediately fall,” Beauty Editor Kara Jillian Brown explains. “Mousse gives you the best of both worlds.”

TRESemmé Extra Hold Mousse, for example, offers maximum hold and control without stiffness or stickiness. Just put some of the ultra-light product onto a wide-tooth comb, then comb from the roots toward the ends of your damp hair. Add more mousse to the comb as needed.

Let your hair air dry for a natural look. If you prefer a smoother, more controlled finish, try blow drying with a flat or round brush and using a curling iron with a bigger barrel (like a one or two inch option) or a flatiron (Brown’s preferred approach) on large sections of your hair to create loose, tousled waves.
