Paul Scholes thinks Man Utd star will become even ‘better player’ with key position change under Ruben Amorim
Paul Scholes believes that one Manchester United star could thrive even more at Old Trafford with a slight position change under Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim.
Ruben Amorim has agreed to become the new Manchester United head coach and the 39-year-old Portuguese manager will succeed Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford.
Erik ten Hag was sacked from United last week after the Red Devils’ disappointing start to the 2024-25 campaign, with Amorim inking a deal until June 2027.
Amorim, who has been praised for his impact at Sporting CP, will arrive at Old Trafford at the start of the international break on 11th November.
United triggered the £9.25m release clause in the Sporting CP contract of Amorim, who has led the Portuguese side to two Primeira Liga titles as a manager.
Ruud van Nistelrooy has been interim manager at United after Erik ten Hag’s sacking and will lead the Red Devils against Leicester City at Old Trafford on Sunday.
Scholes on Man Utd star under Amorim
Manchester United were in action on Thursday night in the Europa League and the Red Devils picked up their first win in Europe this season.
Amad Diallo’s stunning brace sealed all three points for Ruud van Nistelrooy’s men at Old Trafford against defending Greek Super League champions PAOK.
Speaking ahead of the 2-0 win over PAOK, Paul Scholes insisted that Kobbie Mainoo could be deployed differently at United under Sporting CP boss Ruben Amorim.
Kobbie Mainoo had his breakout season at Old Trafford in the 2023-24 campaign and became a key central midfield figure for former United manager Erik ten Hag.

However, Scholes believes that the 19-year-old England star could be one of two No 10 options for incoming United manager Amorim alongside Bruno Fernandes.
“He has then got his two No 10s,” he said on TNT Sports, as per Sportskeeda.
“Fernandes is one of them and I actually think Mainoo could be one of them, too. I think he’ll be a better player higher up; it will suit it more.”
Scholes talks Man Utd players and Amorim
Scholes has tipped Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte to be key central midfielders for Amorim, but the United legend has raised concerns about the wing-back roles.
Amorim is widely expected to play a three-man backline at United and replicate his Sporting CP style of play at Old Trafford by using wing-backs.
Scholes remains unconvinced that Marcus Rashford or Alejandro Garnacho would be able to adapt to the demands of being wing-backs under Amorim.
“There are three or four players, especially forward players, who don’t want to do the ugly side of the game,” he said.
“He’s going to have to make them do that. We talk about the back three, we have six centre-halves they can choose from.
“He has got the two central midfielders in Casemiro and [Manuel] Ugarte. It’s the wing-backs that could be the problem.
“Does he want wingers who are going to run back? If he wants that, I’m not sure Rashford and Garnacho are right for that.
“Does he want two wing-backs in [Diogo] Dalot and [Noussair] Mazraoui who might be a little bit better defensively but not as good going forward?”
