Renown Kenyan Journalist Awarded Rwandan Citizenship

The Kenya Times has reported on X that the Rwandan government has honored Kenyan journalist Eugene Anangwe with Rwandan citizenship, recognizing his substantial contributions to the country’s media industry. Anangwe, the founder and CEO of the East Africa Media Group and a former TV47 CEO, received his citizenship on November 7, as announced in an official gazette by Rwanda. He was one of 296 individuals from various countries, including Uganda, Burundi, DR Congo, Ethiopia, Egypt, Nigeria, and Ghana, to be granted Rwandan nationality.

Eugene Anangwe expressed his gratitude on social media, thanking Rwandan President Paul Kagame, saying, “Thank you, Rwanda; here to serve you, protect you with my all! To my President Paul Kagame, I am truly honored.”

Under Rwandan nationality laws, individuals can receive citizenship based on a range of qualifications, including skills, unique talents, or significant investments beneficial to Rwanda. Although specific reasons for each individual’s citizenship are not typically detailed, Anangwe’s long-term residence and substantial impact on Rwandan media were likely decisive factors. Anangwe has lived in Rwanda since 2008, though he has worked in Kenya intermittently.

Throughout his media career, Anangwe has held prominent roles in both Rwandan and Kenyan media. In Rwanda, he has worked with CNBC Africa as Country Manager and held roles at Contact TV and Contact FM. Additionally, he produced and hosted the talk show In Focus Rwanda between 2017 and 2019, during which he also served as a KTN News correspondent for the Standard Group.

Anangwe’s media experience extends to Kenya, where he served as CEO of Look Up Media and anchored news on Look Up TV. He also worked as CEO at Cape Media from 2019 to 2020, with previous roles as a senior anchor and producer for the Standard Group.

Eugene Anangwe graduated from Mount Kenya University with a first-class honors degree in Mass Media and Communication. His dual citizenship marks a significant milestone in his career and strengthens his ties to Rwanda, where he is now a recognized citizen.
