Leicester City are the final opponents of Van Nistelrooy’s interim tenure, Steve Cooper taking his side back to Old Trafford for a Premier League clash on Sunday afternoon
Leicester City will be out to spoil Ruud van Nistelrooy’s potential farewell match at Manchester United.
City head back to Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon for a Premier League clash with the Red Devils in what will be Van Nistelrooy’s final match in interim charge before Ruben Amorim leaves Sporting Lisbon to take over. City were also the first opponents of the Dutchman’s short tenure, the Carabao Cup tie last week that finished 5-2 to United.
Van Nistelrooy is unbeaten so far, having drawn with Chelsea and then having beaten Greek side PAOK 2-0 in the Europa League on Thursday night. But City will aim to ruin that record.
If they do, they could end Van Nistelrooy’s spell at United on a sour note. Brought in during the summer to form part of Erik ten Hag’s staff, there’s been no confirmation that Van Nistelrooy will remain on Amorim’s backroom team.
Asked if he felt the team’s good performances over the past week had enhanced his prospects of being involved under the new manager, Van Nistelrooy said: “I think that Ruben, what he is saying, his focus is on [Sporting against] Braga and I focus on Leicester. I think that’s a great one for now.
“And that shows that we’re focused on the day-by-day job and get the maximum out of the team. So let him focus on Braga, I’ll focus on Leicester. I will see after that. Sunday is a big game for us in the league to get a good performance in again.
“I’m only busy with one thing in my mind. I want my last game as an interim, I want to prepare it as good as I can and give the players everything they need to get the best performance out of them and, hopefully, get three very important points, keep them at Old Trafford and that’s my absolute focus. And other than that, I don’t look too far ahead to be really honest, it’s too important.”
City have only won one of their last 16 trips to Old Trafford, doing so behind closed doors in 2021. Luke Thomas and Caglar Soyuncu scored in a 2-1 victory over Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.
