Former Migori Governor Okoth Obado, along with his aides Michael Oyamo and Caspal Obiero, are on trial in connection with the murder of Rongo University student Sharon Otieno and her unborn child, which occurred on September 3, 2018, in Homa Bay County.
Obado’s defense, led by Senior Counsel Kiko Kilukumi and Rogers Sagana, argued in court that there is no direct evidence linking Obado to Sharon’s death. They emphasized that the case relies solely on circumstantial evidence and revolves around Obado’s relationship with Sharon, her pregnancy, and financial support he provided.
Kilukumi highlighted that although a DNA test confirmed Obado as the father of Sharon’s unborn child, Obado had been supporting her financially, including plans to buy her a home and regular maintenance funds, demonstrating his commitment.
Kilukumi contended that the actual perpetrators, including a taxi driver, Jackson Gombe, who allegedly drove Sharon to the scene, were never apprehended or charged. He questioned why these individuals were not pursued if they were directly involved.
On the other side, the prosecution, led by Nicholas Ole Sena, presented forensic and medical evidence, arguing that a clear chain of events implicates Obado and his co-accused. They referenced inconsistencies in Oyamo’s testimony, suggesting he faked a kidnapping to divert suspicion from his alleged involvement. The prosecution concluded by urging the court to consider the weight of the circumstantial evidence and place the accused on defense, asserting a strong link between the accused and the murder.
The court will determine whether Obado and the co-accused will be required to defend themselves against the charges.
