ST Mary’s Primary School recently unveiled their new state-of-the-art foundation phase play centre during a joyful opening ceremony.

The new facility contributes to the all round improvement of childhood development. The centre is specially designed to cater for both free and structured play, with an array of interesting equipment. The opening ceremony, attended by school governing body members, stakeholders and staff, celebrated the journey of the school’s passion project.

Ramesh Singh, deputy principal, said, “The centre will further create an enabling environment that will propel the young learners towards fulfilling their potentials based on the principles of play, creativity and physical movement.”

He said the whole playground was covered with cushioned astroturf, making it friendly for all weather conditions.

“The structure also supports indoor sports activities, including soccer and netball, making it a versatile space for various physical activities,” said Singh.

A notable attraction of the centre is its five-hole putt-putt course, the first to be established within any primary school in the area. Principal Roshan Ramdheen proudly spoke of the benefits of golf, even in the simplified form of putt-putt.

“Golf is an excellent medium to teach patience, focus and problem-solving skills. It will also help build hand-eye coordination, spatial awareness, and fine motor skills,” said Ramdheen.

Ramdheen emphasised that such a playground with sheltered seating areas will provide facilities not only for fun but also for development of character, teamwork and sportsmanship.

“Our mission is to provide learners with a well-rounded education that goes beyond academics. By introducing activities like golf, swimming and robotics, we aim to develop well-balanced curriculum,” said Ramdheen.

St Mary’s plans to utilise the play centre to benefit the community, allowing more local families to benefit from this special facility.
