The excitement at West Ham was palpable this summer when Julen Lopetegui arrived.

West Ham fans were fed up with David Moyes’ style of play, and to be hiring a former Real Madrid manager brought a real sense of hope to the London Stadium.

However, 10 games into this season, Lopetegui’s start to life at West Ham isn’t going as planned.

West Ham sit 14th in the table, and Lopetegui’s job is already on the line.

Many are starting to believe that hiring Lopetegui was a mistake in the first place, and speaking on the Premier League All Access Podcast, Scott Minto has shared his verdict on this situation.

West Ham should’ve hired someone like Ange Postecoglou

Minto shared his verdict on Lopetegui and how he’s doing at West Ham.

The pundit said that Lopetegui isn’t the right fit for the Hammers, claiming that the club should’ve gone for a more attacking coach akin to Ange Postecoglou than a defensive-minded manager after years of watching David Moyes’ brand of football.

“I think a lot of us said at the start, or when he was appointed, David Moyes had done a great job. So if you’re not keeping David Moyes, you need the almost anti-David Moyes, you know, like an Ange Postecoglou or someone like that,” Minto said.

“And Lopetegui is simply not that. I think that would be harsh on Tim Steidten, because I was, along with many, saying that West Ham had a really good summer transfer market. Yes, Fullkrug being injured doesn’t help, but that happens.

Julen Lopetegui compared to Postecoglou

Hindsight is always 20/20, and while a manager like Postecoglou would probably be better-received at a club like West Ham at the moment, making that sort of move is risky.

Yes, Postecoglou is doing a decent job at Tottenham, but, let’s not forget, hiring the Australian was a massive gamble for Spurs.

Lopetegui’s CV prior to arriving at West Ham is so much more impressive than Postecoglou’s was.

Rayo Vallecano South Melbourne
Porto Panachaiki
Spain Whittlesea Zebras
Real Madrid Brisbane Roar
Sevilla Melbourne Victory
Wolves Australia

Celtic

With that sort of CV, Lopetegui looked like a slam dunk appointment, but, sadly, it hasn’t worked out that way.

West Ham are now looking at potential replacements, and if the Hammers fail to beat Everton at the weekend, it could be curtains for Lopetegui in London.
