The Alzu Tour de Farm’s Positive Impact
A key factor of the race is the funds generated for charity, with the following differences made in people’s lives:
• Safe and trustworthy transport for learners who can’t afford bus tickets to commute to and from school.
• Making a place at school where children can eat their porridge, that the school provide, in the morning, protected from environmental challenges – especially in the winter.
• Food parcels for learners who can’t afford to bring a lunch box to school.
• Monthly groceries of necessities for families to enable children to have a better home environment.
• Access to medical and mental health care.
• Making it possible for some students to attend matric farewell.
• Safe accommodation in the hostel with a stable environment and nutritious meals.
The race organisers of the Alzu Tour de Farm shared a very special story with the Middelburg Observer, about how the race affected a specific learner’s life:
“This learner lived in a neglectful and abusive household. Throughout their time at school, they had to manage to survive by doing odd jobs to keep themselves afloat.
After a while, the learner was kicked out of their home and started missing school as survival became their main priority. We became aware of the situation and with the use of counselling, we identified this learner’s needs. The learner was supported by the school and was even offered a place to stay in the school’s hostel. The funds generated from the Alzu Tour de Farm were used to pay hostel fees and help with any other expenses needed.”
With the help of fundraising events like Tour de Farm, learners can finish school and see a brighter tomorrow and not just live day to day.
