What Rangers Europa League rivals say about clash that could work in Philippe Clement’s favour
Up next for Rangers in the Europa League is a trip to France to take on Nice.
Gers performed well against Olympiacos last night and the draw was arguably the LEAST they deserved. But seven points at this stage sets things up well.
In the ‘as it stands’ table, Rangers are comfortably inside the section that would qualify for the play-off round and just outside qualifying straight through to the last 16.
There are clearly some tough games to come against Premier League giants Manchester United and Tottenham after Nice, but the fixtures then finish up with a winnable home game against Union Saint-Gilloise.
Nice boss Franck Haise says Rangers game is must-win
Nice managed to salvage a draw against FC Twente last night with a certain Sam Lammers on the scoresheet.
The Dutch side led 2-0 in France and then just when the home team got themselves back in it through Jeremie Boga, they had Sofiane Diop sent off.
But they continued to rally and managed to take a point thanks to a Mohamed-Ali Cho equaliser. Twente then had Bart van Rooij sent off on an eventful evening.
That was just Nice’s second point of the league phase after defeats to Ferencvaros and Lazio and a draw with Real Sociedad.
That’s why their boss is making the next game crucial to their chances of qualifying.
Franck Haise said: “It’s very clear if we want to continue our progress in this competition, we must win our next game against Rangers at home.
“That game will be decisive along with our last game of the year against Union Saint-Gilloise.
“We have to win because we have not managed to do that after four games.
“We can say that we managed to be resilient and the 2-2 draw is good because it looked unlikely at one stage.
“But I cannot ignore the first hour against Twente because we were not at the required level.
“We lost two players late on to injury and that had an impact, but I have to take responsibility for not winning a game yet.”
Rangers in a good position in Europa League
Clearly, Rangers would like to take something from the Nice game but there won’t be as much pressure on Philippe Clement and his men as there will on their hosts, which could in turn work in their favour.
Last night’s point means the Light Blues have a really strong chance of progression.
There could be a world where they don’t pick up any more points and still go through, though it would obviously be preferable to play things a bit safer.
The games against Nice and Union Saint-Gilloise present the best chances of getting something and you’d like to think the team would be favourites for the latter in front of a packed Ibrox.
