Why I Want Women to Own Gardens In Their Backyards – Oluremi Tinubu

…Set to Unveil Winner From Competition In December 2024

ABUJA: Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu has again underscored the importance of women growing crops in their backyard at home, saying beyond fostering healthy living for themselves and their families, it guarantees food availability.

According to the First Lady, since she went into home farming, the benefits have been enormous, especially the organic foods she harvest from her farm.

She said this accounts for why Wives of State governors are being encouraged to pass the message across to their citizens to imbibe home-grown foods.

She made these remarks on Thursday, while meeting with wives of state governors from the federation and FCT as part of her Renewed Hope Initiative RHI.

The First Lady also disclosed that the RHI has gone into partnership with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture to boost home farming.

She revealed that it was on account of this that the Renewed Hope Initiative Home Garden competition was unveiled to encourage more women to key into it.

According to her the winner of the competition will be unveiled by December this year.

The First Lady, as part of her pet project, the Renewed Hope Initiative RHI has unveiled a number of programmes impacting lives nationally.

Under her supervision, she has initiated scholarship and bursary awards to indigent Nigerian students from across the states of the federation, while also championing the Infrastructure Renewal Project, Early Childhood Development Programme,Women and Young Farmers Support Programme, Distribution of Fertilisers, Young Farmers Club among others.

Speaking to reporters on her pet project with specific interest in home farming, she said, “we have the unveiling of the every home a garden competition. Very soon, December, we are going to announce the winner. We have shortlisted three.

“If you look at the every home-made garden, it will amaze you how many people are being inspired to have their own garden. So this is what I am doing. You know, just to have people to do what I do, and then, if you are a leader, and then you want people to follow, you have to set a good standard, and that’s the standard I am setting.

“On the garden issue, every garden is a winner. Like I was saying in there, the American orientation. You know, when you push people, just like when I was teaching, that was how I moved my students. When we started spelling bee in Lagos, just like the One day governor, we push them, they all excel. They all did, even we have the first class degree holders and they are from public schools, not private schools, so I have done that throughout my career. These are incentive”.
