The only Audi RS 6 Avant GT model sold in Africa was auctioned off in Cape Town yesterday, with a bid of R4.5 million getting it over the line. Audi is also announcing the donation of these proceeds to the Kutlwanong Centre for Maths, Science and Technology, a non-profit institute promoting the learning of maths and sciences for kids in townships and rural areas.

The one and only Audi RS 6 Avant GT

Inspired by the legendary 1989 Audi 90 Quattro IMSA GTO race car, the Audi RS 6 Avant GT is a souped-up version of the regular RS 6 Avant. The Avant GT has a carbon-fibre bonnet and fenders, an adjustable coilover suspension, high-performance tyres, and features better handling via an optimised Quattro sport differential. Only 660 have been produced worldwide, and only one is being sold in Africa. Number 74 was auctioned off yesterday for R4.5 million, making it a truly unique collector’s item for the winner.

The Kutlwanong Centre for Maths, Science and Technology was first launched nineteen years ago in 2005. It’s a nonprofit organisation dedicated to helping learners pursue STEM careers like commerce, engineering, science, mining, technology, and mathematics. The NGO has helped more than 40,000 children in the township reach 50% and above in mathematics and physical sciences in addition to distinctions of 80% and above for 12,000 matriculants.

“This extraordinary donation by Audi South Africa means so much,” says Kutlwanong CEO Tumelo Mabitsela. “The funds we’ve received will go toward further supporting our work to assist students to pursue STEM careers. This will ensure that South African youth participate in, and are equipped for, the Fourth Industrial Revolution.”
