I know, losing sucks. I have a lot of thoughts on that score and what we need to do differently. But all hope is not lost. The Democrats still have a chance to take the house.
Late votes that come in tend to favor the Democrats. Yesterday, Democrats had won 191 seats, and were leading in another 21 races. That means that they need to flip six more seats to reach the magic number of 218 votes. This morning, 200 seats have been called for the Democrats. They are now leading in 13 seats, which will bring them up to 213. There are ten seats still out there that we are trailing in, which means that five of these need to break our way.
Reuters and many other sources have the current figures. Six of the outstanding races are from California. One is from Alaska, one is from Arizona, one is from Iowa, and one is from Colorado. If the Democrats can regain control of the House and Hakeem Jeffries elected as speaker, then they will be in a position to stop the worst impulses of Trump. He can’t do everything by executive order.
Even if they don’t, every new seat won will help. The Republicans have had a hard time keeping their house in order the last two years, and this time will be no different. The knives are already out for MAGA Mike. And in the Senate, as much as we hate the filibuster, traditions have a way of dying awfully hard. Many measures still require 60 votes to pass.
