Google Enhances Pixel Call Screening with AI Replies Feature

Google is testing a new feature called AI Replies for its Pixel smartphones, aimed at improving the call screening experience. This feature, currently under development, will allow Pixel users to receive more personalized and dynamic responses when screening calls.

The existing Call Screen function, which already uses Google Assistant to answer calls and display the caller’s message on the screen, will be upgraded with AI Replies. This new feature will take it a step further by offering smart, context-aware replies that better match the caller’s intent.

Reports from Android Authority suggest that the feature will use advanced AI technology to analyze the caller’s response in real time, allowing users to choose from tailored replies. This would replace the basic, pre-written responses available today, making interactions feel more natural and flexible.

The AI Replies feature is believed to be powered by an AI model, referred to internally as “dobby.” Additionally, Gemini Nano, a language model that powers some of the Pixel 9 series’ AI capabilities, may be involved in delivering these more personalized responses.

Currently, Call Screen is available in select regions, although not yet in India. It helps users screen unknown calls without answering them directly, offering simple responses when needed. For example, if the call involves scheduling an appointment, users may receive prompts to confirm or decline the appointment. However, the current system is limited when dealing with more complex or nuanced interactions.

AI Replies aims to solve this problem by using machine learning to “understand” the caller’s words and generate more suitable responses. This could be particularly useful in professional settings or customer service scenarios where quick, specific replies are essential. Additionally, the AI-powered replies are expected to save users time by reducing the need for manual responses.

Though Google has not confirmed an official release date, reports suggest that the AI Replies feature could soon be tested more widely. As part of its ongoing innovation, Google continues to enhance the Pixel Call Screen, potentially setting a new standard for AI-driven call management.
