Motorists don’t have to venture far to experience some of the world’s most spectacular road trips, offering a plethora of scenic views and attractions from the comfort of their own vehicles. Whether it’s traversing Scotland’s North Coast 500 or exploring the rugged coastlines of The South Downs in Sussex, there are countless intriguing destinations to discover.

According to Nationwide Vehicle Contracts, one of the UK’s top road trips is the Atlantic Highway in Cornwall. This route spans approximately 98 miles from Barnstaple in Devon to Newquay, showcasing the diverse range of attractions Cornwall has to offer.

While the journey is characterised by the rolling fields of the Cornish countryside, those in taller vehicles like campervans can also catch sight of the sea. Starting the trip and crossing into Cornwall, the first point of interest travellers encounter is Morwenstow, situated about three miles off the A39.

Morwenstow’s standout feature is a tiny cliff-top hut – the smallest property owned by the National Trust. Built in 1843 by Reverend Hawker using driftwood that washed ashore nearby, it may not sound exciting initially, but it’s certainly unique.

The area also boasts numerous picturesque walks, many of which offer visitors the chance to enjoy the refreshing sea breeze, reports the Express.

On the journey along the Atlantic Highway, you’ll find Widemouth Bay, a charming spot just beyond the Bude resort. As the name suggests, it boasts two expansive beaches that merge at low tide, nestled next to a laid-back village.

It’s the perfect pit stop for drivers in need of a bite to eat or a chance to stretch their legs on the sandy shores. TV buffs will also appreciate a detour to Port Isaac, a quaint 14th-century coastal village.

While the name might not ring a bell, its scenic streets may look familiar – they’re featured in the ITV drama series Doc Martin, where it’s known as Portwenn. The narrow lanes of Port Isaac aren’t ideal for larger vehicles, but they’re perfect for a leisurely stroll, offering a chance to admire the area’s cosy cottages and boutique shops.
