Barbora Krejcikova won her second Grand Slam singles title at Wimbledon this year.
Barbora Krejcikova has addressed concerns about her consistency after making it out of the group stage at the WTA Finals.
The Wimbledon champion was not one of the top eight players to earn the most ranking points this season but she was still given a place in the tournament as one of this year’s Major winners.
Krejcikova topped her group and reached the semi-finals in Riyadh. She later said she wasn’t a “robot” after confronting her rollercoaster season.
Krejcikova has had an unusual year. The world No. 13 came into the grass season on a five-match losing streak but she went on to lift her first singles Grand Slam title in three years at Wimbledon.
She struggled for form after her quarter-final run at the Olympics, winning just two matches since. But the 28-year-old has suddenly rediscovered her best form at the WTA Finals, winning two of her three matches to top the orange group.
Krejcikova blew a set and double-break lead over Iga Swiatek in her opening match. But she beat Jessica Pegula and Coco Gauff to advance to the semi-final as the group winner.
Ahead of her semi-final, the Czech star fielded questions on social media. And she candidly confronted her lack of consistency this year.
Krejcikova has held several X (formerly known as Twitter) Q&As, even answering her fans during her Wimbledon run. And she was back at it while in Riyadh for the WTA Finals.
One supporter took the opportunity to get Krejcikova’s insight on her own game. “a bit of a direct Question here Barbie, what do you think is the reason for your inconsistency?” @idnani_sohil asked.
“Over the last few years we know your peak level is unbelievable. But what are some of the factors you think prevent you from bringing this level consistently on tour? Asking as a fan!”
The two-time Grand Slam champion welcomed the upfront query. She replied: “Thank you for this question! The most interesting one. I wish I knew the answer.”
While she didn’t have one specific reason for her up-and-down season, Krejcikova provided some theories.
“I think for example in 2021 I was very consistent. This year was a rollercoaster. But overall, it’s very complex. Sometimes it’s injuries preventing me, sometimes the mental part. I am not a robot,” she added.
During her Q&A, the world No. 13 also revealed that Swiatek was one of her favourite opponents to face and shared her goals for next season.
Although she lost to the Pole earlier this week, Krejcikova said: “I like to play against Iga because she brings out the best in me and I always know it’s gonna be a good match.”
And there’s one thing she wants to do in 2025. “Stay healthy. That’s the only goal,” she wrote.
