Video: 2024 Mercedes-AMG G63 now in Malaysia from RM1.95m – What’s actually new?

Here it is, the new big-G, the 2024 Mercedes-AMG G63. Despite its brand-new model code (W465), though, the new G-wagen still sticks to the good old formula: if it isn’t broken, don’t fix it.

Some things never change, like the signature boxy and rugged design that the G-class is known for. However, the latest one features changes related to aerodynamic enhancements, such as a smoothed-out A-pillar, a small lip spoiler on the leading edge of the roof, and newly redesigned bumpers with larger air intakes up front.

Inside the 2024 Mercedes-AMG G63, the cabin maintains its classic, utilitarian design, featuring twin 12.3-inch screens on the dashboard, now running an updated version of the MBUX software. Sadly for physical clock lovers, Mercedes has opted to remove the IWC timepiece in favour of a digital watch in the centre screen.

The biggest change lies under the hood. But despite the trend of engine downsizing – like the latest Mercedes-AMG C63, which has had its V8s replaced with a four-cylinder hybrid powertrain – Mercedes has thankfully retained the venerable 4.0-litre bi-turbo V8, producing 585 hp and 850 Nm.

The big change here comes in the form of a 48V mild hybrid system, with a belt-driven starter generator (BSG) motor housed within the updated nine-speed AMG Speedshift TCT gearbox, providing an additional boost of 20 hp under acceleration.

With the help from the BSG, the G63 now accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 4.3 seconds, aided by the AMG Performance Package that comes as standard in Malaysia. All that power is sent to all four wheels via a permanent four-wheel drive system, complete with three locking differentials and a low-range transfer case, as has been since the first-generation G-Class.

Another new addition is the AMG Active Ride Control suspension, which uses active hydraulics to improve the Big-G’s handling both on- and off-roads. But really, who takes the G63 to tackle muddy trails?

Want this baller of an SUV? The Mercedes-AMG G63 is priced from RM1,948,888 on-the-road, without insurance, and comes with an unlimited mileage four-year warranty.
