What’s One Automotive Gimmick You Love To Hate?

Whether it’s quirky headlights or in-car karaoke, there has to be an automotive gimmick that you love to hate

Puddle lights are awful, but I want them.

The modern car is a pretty marvelous thing when you think about it. They can have slick styling, luxurious interiors packed with all kinds of creature comforts and come with more technology than you can shake a stick at. Some features on new cars, however, are just there to get people talking.

New features like systems that let you summon your cars or automakers replacing rear view mirrors with cameras are good at getting people talking about new models, but at what point do they stop being useful features and start being useless gimmicks? And if they are a gimmick, is it a gimmick that you can’t help but love?

Those are the kind of features we want to hear about today, the automotive accessories and options that you love to hate. So, what have you got?

Maybe you think Tesla’s in-car karaoke machine is a waste of electricity… right up until the moment you have to kill time while charging. Or alternatively, you might think the new star-shaped headlights on Mercedes cars are a ridiculous design detail that you’d defend until death.

Personally, I’ll always think of puddle lights as being a bit extra. Whether it’s Mercedes logos that beam onto the floor in an EQS or the kind of bonkers personalized ones you see online that project country dancing footwork. They’re all ridiculous, but I can’t help but love them and want them in my car immediately.

That’s just my favorite automotive gimmick, what would you say is yours? Head to the comments section below to let us know the automotive gimmicks that you love to hate and we’ll round up some of the best responses in a slideshow next week.
