Prince William opened up about his difficult and tumultuous 2024, calling it the hardest year of his life in a new, candid interview in Cape Town, South Africa.
“It’s been dreadful,” he told reporters (via E! News). “It’s probably been the hardest year in my life.” He then added that, “Trying to get through everything else and keep everything on track has been really difficult.”
Both William’s father, King Charles, and his wife, Kate Middleton, were diagnosed with cancer this year. And while Kate has finished her lengthy course of preventative chemotherapy, Charles is still undergoing treatment.
“I’m so proud of my wife, I’m proud of my father, for handling the things that they have done,” William said. “But from a personal family point of view, it’s been, yeah, it’s been brutal.”
“I couldn’t be less relaxed this year,” he continued, “so it’s very interesting you’re all seeing that. It’s more a case of just crack on and you’ve got to keep going. I enjoy my work and I enjoy pacing myself and keeping sure that I have got time for my family, too.”
Kate opened up about the completion of her preventative chemotherapy in September, and spoke candidly about the impact its had on her family.
“As the summer comes to an end, I cannot tell you what a relief it is to have finally completed my chemotherapy treatment,” she said. “The last nine months have been incredibly tough for us as a family. Life as you know it can change in an instant and we have had to find a way to navigate the stormy waters and road unknown. The cancer journey is complex, scary and unpredictable for everyone, especially those closest to you.”
