RSVP’s Megan Martin has given her guide for a weekend in Louth as a local, sharing her top picks for things to do, sights to see and the best places to get a bite to eat
Louth may be the smallest county in Ireland, but don’t let its size fool you.
This tiny but mighty county is jam-packed with things to do, places to eat, great hotels, stunning scenery and some of the best beaches in Ireland, if I do say so myself. Here,
RSVP’s Louth local Megan Martin shares her favourite places to visit in one of the county’s most popular destinations… Carlingford.
Louth has lots to offer and you’ll find nice beach towns all down the coast from Blackrock to Clogherhead and Termonfeckin. However, it’s safe to say Carlingford is a step above when it comes to scenery, activities and atmosphere.
About Carlingford…
The charming medieval village of Carlingford has something for everyone. It’s conveniently located halfway between Belfast and Dublin and nestled in the heart of the Cooley Peninsula at the foot of the Slieve Foy and overlooking the Mourne mountains – the views are spectacular from every vantage point.
Where to stay…
In Carlingford, it doesn’t get better than The Four Seasons Hotel. The four-star family-run hotel is within walking distance of the town and has a fabulous spa and dining options to boot.
Things to do…
When it comes to activities, it’s no exaggeration to say Carlingford has it all. Carlingford Lough is home to lots of water-based fun, from kayaking, banana boating, paddle boarding and canoeing, to swimming, ferry rides and boat tours. On dry land, you’ll find target sports, hiking, escape rooms, brewery tours, whiskey tasting, cookery courses, golf, guided walking tours, go-karting, mountain biking, rock climbing and an aerial adventure park – the possibilities are endless. One of my best weekend activities was cycling along the lough on the Carlingford greenway. Hire a bike and take in the stunning scenery, plus the path is ideal for novice cyclists and children.
Where to eat…
After exerting yourself, Ruby Ellen’s Tea Rooms is the ideal place for a warm cuppa and delicious treat, plus their afternoon tea is amazing. The nearby Fitzpatrick’s Bar is a bit outside town but worth the short drive for their incredible food and famous festive displays.
