‘America Is A Liar’ — Black Women React With Shock And Tears To Donald Trump’s Election Win
The 2024 election has come to an end and although Vice President Kamala Harris put up an extraordinary fight with just a little more than 100 days to campaign, the battle for the presidential throne was ultimately won by Donald Trump.
As expected, much of the world—including celebrities and everyday people—had mixed reactions to the outcome, and Black women were no exception. Many felt disappointment, frustration, and sadness. Some have already altered in their mind what their future will look like due to the election while others were completely unfazed.
Let’s take a look at some women who have since reacted to the news.
A few took the high road and directed their attention to showing gratitude to VP Kamala Harris.
Cardi B
Rapper Cardi B has been very vocal about her political views for years. She even spoke at a Milwaukee, Wis., rally to endorse Harris just days before the election. So when Trump took the win, Cardi offered kind words to VP Harris while also encouraging her followers to keep their heads up.
In the note she said, “To Vice President Kamala, no matter what they’ve said to bring you down or belittle your run for presidency they can never say you didn’t run your race with honesty and with integrity!”
She continued, “This may not mean much but I am so proud of you! No one has ever made me change my mind and you did! I never thought I would see the day that a woman of color would be running for the president of the United States, but you have shown me, showed my daughters and women across the country that anything is possible. Thank you for being an example, thank you for being empowered, thank you for being a real example of what the American dream should be!”
Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester
Democratic Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester made history on Election Day by becoming the first Black woman to represent Delaware in the U.S. Senate.
Despite having her own win to celebrate, Rochester took a moment to show Harris some love. In a statement on Instagram she said, “From the bottom of my heart I want to thank Vice President Kamala Harris for stepping up to run when our country needed her leadership, tenacity, and commitment to serve the American people the most. Because of the trails she blazed, the lives she touched, the communities she fought for, the stories she uplifted, we are better.”
One civilian on X wrote, “I hope VP Kamala Harris knows that for the ones who supported and voted for her—we saw you, we heard you, and we thank you for the beautiful vision/hope you gave us, of what could have been a progressive step forward in this backwards stepping country. You’re still THAT woman.”
Some folks took the news hard with mixed emotions of anger and disappointment.
One person on X posted, “I have never cried because of the outcome of a presidential election loss in my life until today. @KamalaHarris gave us a picture of a greater and brighter tomorrow for all of us but a certain group of people wouldn’t let her b/c of her gender and color of her skin. I’m broken.”
Tamar Braxton
Tamar Braxton also took to her social media posting a Live, where she spoke to her fans about how she’s dealing with the news.
“Good morning, I am physically sick to my stomach like most of y’all,” she said before going on her screaming rant sprinkled in with some singing.
“I cried myself to sleep last night, I felt it all day yesterday,” she later added. “I feel so unaccomplished as a Black woman. I feel so unappreciated. Like y’all would rather have somebody who would blatantly say, ‘grab ’em by the p-ssy’ and have a microphone as if they are giving a blow job than somebody – and then there was a lady on the View who said she worked for the man and said, ‘y’all do not work for him he is a very dangerous person’ and y’all still sat up here at all these rallies…lying.”
“Like I’m so mad,” she continued. “It feel like a set up and it feel like here we go again, another white man…using and abusing us Black women and no respect. I feel a way. I really do, I feel a way. And so I just wanted to say America’s a liar.”
Another woman who was a supporter of Harris expressed her disdain for the country.
“I woke up very disgusted and disappointed in AMERICA,” she posted on X. “This election really showed that it wasn’t that Kamala wasn’t the better candidate it truly shows the hate that people have for WOMEN and WOMEN of color to be exact. Overqualified and losing to a FELON that was impeached twice.”
The outcome of the election also solidified several Black women’s decision to not have children. With the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade in 2021 and high mortality rates for Black women during pregnancy, the choice to expand their family seemed like too great of a risk for some.
An X user said, “I wanted kids but after this, I decided not to have any. I can’t guarantee that I will be alive. I can’t guarantee that I will receive decent healthcare. All of this is weighing on my mental health. All I wanted was the ‘American Dream.’ I guess it’s not for me”
Someone else wrote, “Officially made the decision tonight not to have children because the risk of being pregnant with Black maternal mortality rates in the in country, with the Supreme Court we are about to have enact a national abortion ban…it’s so painful.”
Some people simply took the loss on the chin and revealed that they weren’t shocked about the election turnout. One individual wrote, “I’m so disappointed about the election results but not surprised. This country and the people do not value black women, so there’s no way they could let an over qualified black woman be president.”
Another unfazed person said, “I’m very unsurprised by this election outcome.”
