‘We’re Frequently Told 2024 Election Will Be Less Peaceful Than Previous Elections – British High Commissioner

In a speech at the King’s Birthday celebration in Accra, British High Commissioner Harriet Thompson expressed concerns that Ghana’s 2024 elections may not maintain the country’s reputation for peaceful polls.

Thompson cited recent conversations with local leaders and citizens, highlighting growing fears of potential unrest.

Thompson emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating that a non-peaceful election would be “incredibly damaging” for Ghana and pose dangers to those directly involved.

She urged Ghanaian politicians and influential figures to advocate for peaceful and transparent elections, emphasizing their role in preventing unrest.

“The good thing is that politicians and others in influential positions…can prevent this from happening,” Thompson said.

Addressing influential attendees, she appealed for their support in ensuring credible, transparent, inclusive, and peaceful elections.

The UK has pledged to support Ghana’s democracy through funding independent observers and deploying British High Commission staff to monitor electoral activities.

Thompson stressed the UK’s commitment, citing shared democratic values and the potential mutual benefits of stability in both nations.

As Ghana prepares for its 2024 elections, Thompson’s words serve as a timely reminder of the importance of peaceful and transparent democratic processes.
