National Legal Services Day, started in 1995 by the Supreme Court of India, aims to provide free legal help and support to the weaker sections of society.

The 9th of November is celebrated annually by all Legal Services Authorities as “Legal Services Day” in accordance with the call made by Chief Justice A.S. Anand in the First Annual Meet.

The first Annual Meeting of the State Legal Services Authorities (NALSA) took place on September 12, 1998, in New Delhi, and examined the progress of ongoing schemes and made decisions to strengthen and streamline legal aid programs in India.

The day emphasizes empowering marginalised communities, highlighting the importance of equal access to justice, and advocating that no one should be deprived of legal representation due to economic disadvantages.

NALSA releases press releases in leading newspapers in English, Hindi, and regional languages to inform the public about the Legal Services Authorities Act, legal aid schemes, Lok Adalats, and legal awareness campaigns, promoting awareness of people’s legal rights.

Through various activities like legal awareness programs, workshops, and camps organised by NALSA and other legal bodies, National Legal Services Day aims to bridge the gap between the law and those who need it most.
