Tweed Jackets Are a Fall Uniform Staple—Here’s How to Style One This Season

If you’re looking for a way to level up your fall wardrobe, look no further than a tweed jacket. With so many options on the market, both new and vintage, there is no shortage of styles to add to any outfit. Tweed, which was originally spun from wool, naturally has a heavier weight and thickness that’s perfect for transitional dressing. But it isn’t just the look and feel of the material that makes it so desirable. Over time, tweed has become a symbol of sophistication and opulence.

Originating in Scotland in the 1800s, tweed was initially a solution for farmers enduring cold weather conditions. Soon after, it turned into a signature cloth of everyday Scottish life. And since Queen Victoria and Prince Albert purchased Scotland’s Balmoral Castle in 1852, it was not long before England’s most influential family started to also wear tweed. Fast forward to 1925, a French designer named Coco Chanel began dating the Duke of Westminster. While the pair visited the royal Scottish estate, Chanel would often borrow the Duke’s tweed sporting jackets. The rest is truly history.

If you know anything about the French label, then you know that you can hardly find a runway collection that doesn’t include this fabric. Vintage Chanel tweed jackets are currently being sold for upwards of $10,000 on resale sites like 1st Dibs. Luckily, there are many other brands that have since created their own iterations at more accessible price points. So no matter if your tweed jacket is designer or not, wearing one will automatically elevate any look. And they go with almost anything.

If you need any more convincing, below are 10 foolproof ideas for styling a tweed jacket this season and beyond.

Monochromatic

The most ideal time of year to wear a tweed monochromatic set is during the fall. The weather is cool enough to wear a heavier-weight blazer, but not so much that you need to wear a coat over it. On the other hand, it’s still warm enough to wear a mini skirt without tights. Truly, it’s the best of both worlds. Add a pair of pointed-toe slingbacks for the ultimate cool-girl finish.

As a Longline Coat

What’s great about tweed jackets is that they can either be worn on their own as a top or as a functional layering piece, depending on the style. In this case, a longline coat can keep you warm while layered over a classic pair of high-waisted jeans, a plunge-neck top, and your go-to ballet slippers. Add a bold-toned handbag for a small, but intentional pop of color to this polished look.

With Leather Thigh-Highs

I couldn’t speak more highly of a tweed waist-cinching belt blazer if I tried. It’s such a flattering silhouette that adds shape to any figure. The texture, especially in a more feminine light pink blend, mixes nicely with anything leather. That’s why a leather mini skirt and sleek thigh-high boots are the ultimate combination. Acing this look is all about playing up the different textures.

With Baggy Jeans

Everyone should have a pair of baggy jeans in their closet. Since they’re inherently more casual, though, wearing them with a tailored top like a collarless tweed jacket is a good way to feel more put together. For shoes, you can lean in either direction with casual flats or more elevated heels. Top it off with your favorite accessories like oval sunglasses, a pair of hoop earrings, and a great handbag.

An Oversized Jacket and Knee-Boots

Not all tweed jackets are tailored to a tee. Sometimes, they come in a slouchier, more oversized fit. If so, you can style it with a slim fitted t-shirt and mini skirt underneath. The mini will leave just enough room for chic knee-high boots to go with. You can even highlight the color of your tweed look by carrying a clutch in the same hue, like this hunter green.

With A Leather Maxi Skirt

If you’re not sure how to make a dark tweed jacket look more interesting, a long leather maxi skirt is a solid option. It adds a luxe vibe to even the most minimalist of outfits. You can add even more dimension by adding a wide belt with a gold metal buckle along your waist. And of course, a classic Chanel Flap Bag will go perfectly with any tweed style.

With Fun Accessories

Even though tweed blazers have a more sophisticated look to them, that doesn’t mean you can’t have a little fun. All you need to do is play around with different patterns, unexpected colors, and cool accessories. Whether it’s a camellia flower brooch or a knitted head scarf, there’s a way to be more experimental with your style while still being chic. After all, isn’t fashion all about having fun?

With Black Trousers

If I’m on my way to the office or to an important meeting, there’s a good chance I’m reaching for a pair of black tailored trousers. The reason? I know I’ll always feel good in them while still being work-appropriate. And when paired with any kind of textured tweed jacket, your outfit will get an instant upgrade. Opt for one with a faux fur trim or something with an equally fuzzy feel to get you through the workday.

With Pearls and Sneakers

The next time you’re looking for a cute outfit to wear on top but need to stay comfortable on your feet, a tweed jacket, graphic tee, and printed mini skirt are a great combo with sneakers. Don’t be afraid to keep things casual with socks and sneakers while still wearing something elegant like pearl drop earrings. It’s that exact balance between laid-back and fancy that makes this outfit so good.

With Straight Jeans and Stilettos

Trust me when I say that you can’t go wrong with a pair of classic straight jeans and a red tweed jacket. If you’re feeling like you want to dress up your denim ‘fit, all you’ll need to do is add a pair of stilettos. And if you’re already incorporating sharp accessories, why not also include a classic handbag and a layered necklace while you’re at it?
