‘He was love,’ American actress Rashida Jones pays tribute to late father Quincy Jones

Rashida Jones uploaded a baby picture of her with her father, and reminisced about his “nocturnal” lifestyle.

In a touching tribute, American actress Rashida Jones called her late father, music producer and composer Quincy Jones, “a giant, an icon, a culture shifter, a genius”.

The 48-year-old actress, who has starred in comedies like The Office (2005 to 2013) and Parks And Recreation (2009 to 2015), shared what it was like to be raised by the music legend in her Instagram post on Nov 8.

Quincy Jones, who produced late pop star Michael Jackson’s Thriller (1982), the best-selling album of all time, died at the age of 91 on Nov 3. He is survived by seven children. Rashida Jones is one of his two daughters from his marriage to actress Peggy Lipton.

In her first post since his death, she uploaded a baby picture of her with her father, in which he was nuzzling her with his face, and reminisced about his “nocturnal” lifestyle.

She wrote: “When I was little, I would wake up in the middle of the night to search for him. Undoubtedly, he would be somewhere in the house, composing (old school, with a pen and sheet music).

“He would never send me back to bed. He would smile and bring me into his arms while he continued to work. There was no safer place in the world for me.”

Quincy Jones worked with stars like Jackson, Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald, and even produced, arranged and conducted a supergroup of more than 40 top singers – including Diana Ross, Bruce Springsteen and Stevie Wonder – for the song We Are The World (1985), a fund-raising single for famine relief.

But Rashida Jones said his true legacy is love. “He made everyone he ever met feel loved and seen,” she said.

Ending on an emotional note, she added: “I was fortunate enough to experience this love in close proximity. I’ll miss his hugs and kisses and unconditional devotion and advice. Daddy, it is an honour to be your daughter. Your love lives forever.”
