French retail giant Carrefour has announced that it has ceased its operations in Jordan as of November 4.
The announcement, made on the retailer’s official social media pages, has garnered widespread reaction as Carrefour becomes one of the latest international corporations to withdraw from Jordan.
The decision to close all Carrefour outlets in Jordan comes after intensified pressure from the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement in the region. The BDS movement, which targets companies for their perceived support of Israel amid the ongoing Gaza conflict, celebrated Carrefour’s exit, calling it a “victory for the Jordanian people.”
“We thank our customers for their support and apologize for any inconvenience this decision may cause,” Carrefour Jordan stated on Facebook, confirming its departure after years of providing a popular supermarket option in the country.
The move has raised concerns among local consumers who relied on Carrefour for grocery and household needs. With Carrefour’s extensive presence across the Middle East, the retailer’s exit from Jordan may also affect future regional operations as it navigates growing calls for corporate accountability amid political sensitivities.
As Carrefour exits Jordan, it continues its international expansion plans in partnership with Dubai’s Apparel Group. In September, the retailer announced plans to open new outlets in North India, marking a strategic pivot toward growth in emerging markets despite regional challenges.
