KISORO, UGANDA — The Uganda Peoples Congress (UPC) President, Mr. Jimmy Akena Obote, is set to visit Kisoro this weekend to bolster the party’s campaign for the upcoming District Woman MP by-election.

Mr. Akena will rally behind the party’s candidate, Ms. Ingabire Mable, as she vies for the seat in what is shaping up to be a competitive race.

With just days to go before the election, UPC’s efforts have gained significant traction, emerging as a formidable force in the region. Sources on the ground report that the party is drawing increasing support, positioning itself as a strong contender against the National Resistance Movement (NRM), the National Unity Platform (NUP), the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), and an independent candidate.

In the past week, the UPC team has intensified its campaign efforts, with Ms. Ingabire Mable leading the charge. On Wednesday, 6th November 2024, the team canvassed in Bufumbira South, followed by another day of campaigning in Bufumbira East on Thursday, 7th November. Today, the UPC is expected to continue its mobilization efforts, focusing on securing voter support for their candidate.

Historically, Kisoro has been a stronghold for the Uganda Peoples Congress, particularly in the 1980s.

The UPC has achieved notable success in the country’s recent by-elections. The party won two significant seats, with Dr. Eunice Apio Otuko securing victory in the Oyam North parliamentary by-election in July 2023. She garnered 15,718 votes, a narrow lead over her closest rival from the National Resistance Movement (NRM). This followed their earlier success in the Dokolo District Woman MP by-election. The UPC’s track record in recent by-elections highlights their growing influence and ability to challenge the ruling party, especially in competitive races.

This history of victories bolsters the UPC’s position as it campaigns for their candidate in the Kisoro District Woman MP by-election.

The Independent Electoral Commission has set the polling date for the Kisoro District Woman MP by-election on Thursday, 14th November 2024.
