“I would like to thank the government for its invaluable support in covering the travel costs, but we are still working to raise the 18m/- needed to cover accommodation, uniforms, equipment and other essential expenses for the team during their week-long stay in Morocco,” she said.
DAR ES SALAAM: THE Tanzania Ladies Golf Union (TLGU) is seeking about 18m/- to fund the national women’s golf team’s preparations and trip to Agadir, Morocco for the 2024 All Africa Challenge Trophy (AACT).
The TLGU President, Queen Siraki, stated that the squad is fully ready for the esteemed biennial competition that unites the best national teams from all over Africa.
Speaking to the ‘Daily News’ in Dar es Salaam on Thursday, Siraki highlighted the three top Tanzanian golfers, Neema Olomi, Hawa Wanyeche and Madina Iddi who have been selected to represent the country at this year’s event and that all are in good shape. The 2024 AACT will be held from November 24th to 30th at the Taghazout Golf Club in Agadir, Morocco.
“We are making good progress in our preparations, but due to the individual responsibilities of the players, we weren’t able to set up a residential camp for them. “Instead, they are training independently at their respective clubs, following special programmes designed by team captain, Hawa (Wanyeche).
The Union is supporting them in ensuring all necessary costs are covered for smooth preparations,” she added.
While Siraki expressed gratitude to the government for covering the players’ return tickets to Morocco, she stressed that the team still needs additional funding.
“I would like to thank the government for its invaluable support in covering the travel costs, but we are still working to raise the 18m/- needed to cover accommodation, uniforms, equipment and other essential expenses for the team during their week-long stay in Morocco,” she said.
Siraki is now calling on companies, institutions and sports enthusiasts to contribute and help fund the team’s preparations.
The three players selected— Olomi, Wanyeche and Iddi—are all competitors with a wealth of experience. They were part of the Tanzanian team that won the East and Central Africa All-Africa Challenge Trophy in Kigali, Rwanda, last year, boosting confidence ahead of the upcoming tournament. In the 2022 AACT, held at Dar es Salaam Gymkhana Club, Tanzania finished third overall.
The South African team successfully defended its title, while Tanzania—led by Wanyeche— delivered an impressive performance. Wanyeche, along with teammates Iddi and Angel Eaton (who turned professional last year), secured third place with a total score of 455 (148, 153, 154).
They were just 11 shots behind Champions South Africa (444) and six behind runners-up Morocco (449). Siraki believes that with the right support, the team can build on this momentum and achieve even greater success in Agadir.
