Were you a regular in town 13 years ago? If so, then you may spot yourself or recognise somebody you know in this week’s edition of the Bigg Night Out series.

The series originally ran in the Chronicle from 1999 until 2013 when our photographers would be out and about in the centre of Newcastle, particularly around the Bigg Market, to snap scenes of full-on social life. Now we dig into the photo archives for the online revival of the series to bring back some happy memories for those involved. This time we go back exactly 13 years to the month of November in 2011.

As you’d expect, the images show dark autumn nights and some people are wrapped up with jackets and one has a scarf. But there are those too who live up to the hardy Geordie reputation and clearly aren’t feeling the cold, being pictured wearing sleeveless tops and, in our first photograph, shorts.

Back in November, 2011, chart hits included Read All About It by Professor Green with Emeli Sandé; Ed Sheeran’s Lego House; JLS’s Take a Chance on Me and Pixie Lott’s What Do You Take Me For? while One Direction released Gotta Be You – their second single from their debut album – and it brought the young stars more acclaim. At the cinema, a big hit of the month was The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part One and new releases included My Week with Marilyn and Moneyball.

That year there been riots in the summer which started in London in August with looting and arson. The riots led to the deaths of five people. There was misery to come in November too with news of the the death of Wales national football team manager Gary Speed, at just 42.

The year was also noted as being the second warmest then on record for the UK, with the Met Office recording an average temperature of 9.62C (49.3F) just below the 2006 record average temperature at the time of 9.73C (49.5F). That’s been surpassed and in 2022 there was an average temperature recorded of 10.03°C (50F).
