Vivian Jenna Wilson, the 20-year-old transgender daughter of Elon Musk, has publicly declared her intention to leave the United States following Donald Trump’s presidential election victory.
In a heartfelt post on Threads on Friday, Wilson expressed her concerns about the country’s future under Trump’s leadership, stating, “I’ve thought this for a while, but yesterday confirmed it for me. I don’t see my future being in the United States.”
Wilson’s decision stems from her fears about the potential anti-trans regulations that may be implemented during Trump’s term. She emphasized that even if these regulations don’t materialize, the fact that millions of people voted for Trump is alarming enough.
“Even if he’s only in office for 4 years, even if the anti-trans regulations magically don’t happen, the people who willingly voted this in are not going anywhere anytime soon,” Wilson wrote.
The relationship between Wilson and her father, Elon Musk, has been strained since her transition in 2022. Wilson has openly spoken about Musk’s transphobic comments and harsh parenting, describing him as “cold,” “quick to anger,” “uncaring,” “narcissistic,” and “cruel.”
In an interview with NBC, Wilson recounted a painful experience where Musk yelled at her for having a high-pitched voice during a road trip when she was in fourth grade. “It was cruel,” she said.
Musk has consistently misgendered Wilson, referring to her by her birth name instead of acknowledging her transition. This act, known as “deadnaming,” is considered disrespectful within the transgender community. Wilson has called out her father’s behavior, stating, “He doesn’t know what I was like as a child because he quite simply wasn’t there.”
The tension between Wilson and Musk escalated when Musk claimed he was “tricked” into signing paperwork for Wilson’s gender-affirming care. Wilson denied this, saying, “He was not by any means tricked.” Grimes, Musk’s partner and mother of three of his children, has publicly supported Wilson, expressing pride in her for standing up for herself.
